Performance Tip

Did you know there are different types of speaking styles? Some people are what we call 'literal speakers' which means they say exactly what they mean. Others are what we call 'inferential speakers', and they tend to infer things, hint or imply rather than say specifically what they want. Generally, males tend to be more literal and females tend to be much more inferential in their comunication. Most people have a preference for the way they are spoken to as well.

In the workplace, people may come across as 'too blunt' or offensive if they are very literal or direct in their speaking. Or they may come across as 'wishy washy' or vague if they are too inferential. So what's the best way to communicate with your colleagues to maintain excellent relationships? Discover their preferred way of communicating. Do they want you to speak to them directly, or do they want you to be less specific and more indirect? And the simplest way to determine this is...

to ASK THEM!

Have a happy week!
